Melastoma, often called Indian Rhododendron, Singapore Rhododendron, or Senduduk, can thrive as a hanging plant with the right care.

Here’s a guide to keep your hanging Melastoma healthy and beautiful:

Light

  • Bright, Indirect Light: Melastoma prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Too much direct sun can scorch its leaves. An east or west-facing window that provides filtered light is ideal.
  • Partial Shade: It can adapt to partial shade, but flowering may be less prolific.
  • Rotate: Regularly rotate your hanging basket to ensure all sides of the plant receive even light exposure.

Watering

  • Consistent Moisture: Melastoma thrives in consistently moist, well-draining soil. Water when the top inch of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch.
  • Avoid Waterlogging: Ensure your hanging basket has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom, which can lead to root rot.
  • Humidity: As a native to tropical regions, Melastoma appreciates high humidity. If your indoor air is dry, consider using a humidifier, placing the pot on a pebble tray with water, or misting the plant regularly.

Soil

  • Well-Draining: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A mix containing loam and organic matter is beneficial.
  • Slightly Acidic: Melastoma prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (around 5.5 – 6.5).

Temperature

  • Warm Temperatures: Maintain a warm environment, ideally between 20°C to 38°C (68°F to 100°F).
  • Avoid Cold Drafts: Protect your hanging Melastoma from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Fertilizing

  • Balanced Fertilizer: Feed your Melastoma with a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10 NPK ratio) every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Reduce in Dormancy: Reduce or stop fertilizing during the cooler months when the plant’s growth slows down.

Pruning

  • After Flowering: Prune lightly after the blooming period to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth.
  • Remove Dead or Damaged Growth: Regularly remove any dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves and stems.

Repotting

  • As Needed: If your Melastoma outgrows its hanging basket (roots becoming crowded or growing out of the drainage holes), repot it into a slightly larger container in spring. Ensure the new pot also has good drainage.

Potential Issues

  • Root Rot: Overwatering is the primary cause of root rot. Ensure proper drainage and allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Leaf Scorch: Direct, intense sunlight can burn the leaves. Provide filtered or indirect light.
  • Pests: Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids or scale insects. Treat as needed with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
