Category: Bulbs And Tubers

Bulbs and tubers are both underground storage organs for plants, but they differ in their structure and appearance:

  • Bulbs
Bulbs are modified leaves that store nutrients. They are short stems with fleshy leaves or leaf bases. Examples of plants with bulbs include garlic, amaryllis, tulips, daffodils, and lilies.

  • Tubers
Tubers are thick underground stems. They can be recognized by the “eyes” from which new stems grow. Examples of plants with tubers include potatoes, cassava, and dahlias.

You can cut tubers into pieces and replant them as long as each piece has an eye. The “eyes” of a potato are buds that can develop into new plants.
