Pteris wulaiensis, also known as the Wulai Brake Fern, is a beautiful fern native to Southern Japan and Taiwan.
Here’s how to care Pteris Wulaiensis Fern:
Light: This fern thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate fronds. A north-facing window is often ideal. If the leaves start to turn yellow, it might not be getting enough light.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering a bit during the autumn and winter months. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
Humidity: Pteris wulaiensis prefers moderate to high humidity. If the air in your home is dry (below 40%), consider using a pebble tray with water, a humidifier, or misting the plant regularly to prevent the leaf tips from browning. Placing it in a steamy bathroom can also provide the necessary humidity.
Temperature: This fern prefers temperatures between 16°C and 24°C (approximately 61°F to 75°F). Avoid sudden temperature changes and keep it away from cold drafts or heat sources like radiators. Temperatures below 10°C (50°F) can cause irreversible damage.
Soil: A well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter is best. A standard houseplant mix with good aeration should work well.
Fertilizing: During the spring and summer (the growing season), fertilize every four waterings with a diluted balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce this to every six waterings in the colder months. Avoid over-fertilizing.
Repotting: Repot your Pteris wulaiensis every two to three years, or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one and use fresh houseplant potting mix. Spring is usually the best time for repotting.
Pruning: Generally, pruning isn’t necessary. However, you can trim away any yellow or brown fronds with clean, sharp scissors to maintain the plant’s appearance and health.

Common Issues:
- Brown or crispy leaf tips: This is often a sign of low humidity or underwatering.
- Yellowing leaves: Could indicate overwatering or insufficient light.
- Pale, twisted leaves: May be a sign of too much direct sunlight.
- Sudden wilting after repotting: This could be transplant shock. Increase humidity and keep the soil evenly moist to help it recover.
By providing the right conditions, your Pteris wulaiensis fern should thrive and bring a touch of delicate beauty to your indoor space.
