The Philodendron Burle Marx Kerala Hybrid is a beautiful and relatively easy-to-care-for houseplant. It’s known for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and its non-climbing, bushy growth habit, typically reaching about 2-3 feet in height.

Here’s a guide to Philodendron Burle Marx Kerala Hybrid care:

Light

This hybrid thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, as it can scorch the leaves. A north or east-facing window is ideal, or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, its growth may slow, and it might lose its lush appearance. Leggy growth can also indicate insufficient light.

Watering

Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch (2.5 cm) of the soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure your pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot. Overwatering can lead to yellowing leaves and other issues. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant’s growth slows down. Drooping leaves can be a sign of both underwatering and overwatering, so it’s essential to check the soil moisture.

Soil

Use a loose, well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A mix containing coco peat, compost, and a little bit of sand (in a ratio like 60:20:20) can work well. The soil should ideally be slightly acidic.

Temperature and Humidity

Being a tropical plant, the Philodendron Burle Marx Kerala Hybrid prefers warm temperatures between 18°C to 27°C (65°F to 80°F). It also appreciates ** средняя to high humidity**. While it can adapt to standard household humidity, providing extra humidity, especially in dry conditions (like during winter with indoor heating), can be beneficial. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or grouping it with other plants. Avoid placing it near drafty areas or air vents.

Fertilizing

During the active growing season (spring and summer), fertilize your plant once a month with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the fall and winter when the plant is dormant. Pale new leaves can sometimes indicate a deficiency in calcium or magnesium.

Pruning

Generally, this hybrid doesn’t require heavy pruning. However, you can prune it to maintain its shape, encourage bushier growth, or remove any yellow or damaged leaves. The best time to prune is in early spring or fall.

Propagation

You can easily propagate your Philodendron Burle Marx Kerala Hybrid through stem cuttings.

  1. Take a 3-4 inch stem cutting with a few leaves and aerial roots (if available).
  2. You can root the cutting in water by placing it in a jar and changing the water every 4-5 days until roots develop.
  3. Alternatively, you can plant the cutting directly into a moist, well-draining potting mix, ensuring at least one node is buried. Keep it in a shaded and humid environment until new growth appears.

Repotting

Since it can be a relatively fast grower, you might need to repot your plant every year or two, or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a pot that is only 2-4 inches larger in diameter than the previous one. Repotting is best done in the spring.
