Light & Temperature

Episcias will do well anywhere in the house as they will thrive under both natural or artificial light. Just be sure to keep them exposed to bright indirect light or fluorescent light for at least 8 hours a day for them to bloom.

This plant does well in average household conditions but prefers slightly warmer environments. It should not be placed in a spot that is exposed to cold drafts.

Watering, Humidity & Misting

Episcias love regular moisture and do not like to dry out completely. Water them once or twice a week, keeping the soil moist but not wet.

They require high humidity to thrive. Misting them daily or placing them in a tray with pebbles and water will help to increase humidity. Make sure that there are no large droplets of water left on the leaves and flowers as the water can stain them.

Soil and Repotting

Use a fast-draining, well-aerated potting mix. Make sure drainage is good to avoid root rot.

Episcias are fast growers that need regular grooming to prevent them from looking overgrown. Grooming and repotting them regularly will also allow them to bloom more often. Repot episicias every six months depending on how vigorously they grow, which is usually once their roots have extended outwards.

Propagation

Propagating an Episicia can be done from cutting their runners and leaves. Place the cuttings in clear water to grow. Root formation can be sped up by covering a plastic or glass cup over to increase humidity. Once they develop roots, you can pot it in a clean planter using fresh soil. Propagation from seeds is also possible.

Fertiliser

Use a balanced fertiliser formulated for houseplants. Follow the directions on the label of our Down to Earth. organic plant food.

Toxicity

Episicias are non-toxic and are therefore safe around kids and/or pets. While it is not poisonous, it is not recommended to ingest any part of it to avoid allergies.

Possible Issues

Under the right care and conditions, your plant will grow happy and healthy. But here are some issues you may encounter while caring for an Episcia:

Spider mites – When spotted, treat with insecticidal soap spray or neem oil.

Brown tips – This can be caused by sunburn or dry air. Make sure that your Episcia is not placed in direct sunlight and are not exposed to drafts.

Yellow leaves – This is due to overwatering and/or cold temperature. Adjust your watering schedule and find a warmer environment for your Episcia.

Drooping leaves with moist soil – The issue may be insufficient light or cold temperature or both. It may also indicate root rot. Try to relocate your plant to a brighter and warmer area, and if that does not work, you may be required to propagate your plant.
