Here is a guide to caring for this Bowiea Volubilis, Climbing Onion:

Light

  • Full sun to partial shade. Climbing onions thrive in bright, indirect light.
  • In their native habitat, they often grow under the shade of shrubs. When growing them indoors, a bright window is ideal.
  • Be cautious of intense, direct sun, especially if the plant is not acclimated to it, as this can cause the foliage to burn.

Water

  • Water sparingly. This is a succulent, so it’s very sensitive to overwatering, which can lead to bulb rot.
  • The most common cause of death for this plant is overwatering.
  • During the growing season (spring and summer), water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Dormancy. The plant typically goes dormant in the late summer or fall, at which point the stems may die back and turn brown. Reduce watering to a minimum or stop it completely during this period. When new growth appears, you can resume your regular watering schedule.

Soil and Potting

  • Well-drained, gritty soil. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix. You can also create your own by mixing regular potting soil with sand, perlite, or pumice to improve drainage.
  • Shallow pot. The bulb grows on top of the soil, so a shallow pot is sufficient.
  • Snug fit. This plant prefers to be a little root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the bulb.
  • When potting, place the bulb on top of the soil with only the bottom part (the root section) buried.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Warm climate. Climbing onions are adapted to warm temperatures. They can be grown outdoors in USDA hardiness zones 10a-11.
  • Indoors. They do well as houseplants, but should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F ().
  • They tolerate a wide range of humidity levels.

Other Care and Maintenance

  • Dormancy. The dormancy period is a natural and important part of the plant’s life cycle. Do not be alarmed if the stems wither and die back. This is normal.
  • Pruning. You can prune off the spent, dry stems during dormancy.
  • Support. The twining stems will climb on any available support. You can provide a small trellis or stakes to guide them, or simply let them trail over the side of the pot.
  • Fertilizer. This plant is adapted to nutrient-poor soil and does not require much fertilizer. If you choose to fertilize, do so very lightly during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced succulent fertilizer.
  • Toxicity. It’s important to note that all parts of the Bowiea volubilis plant are toxic to humans and pets. They contain cardiac glycosides which can cause serious health issues if ingested. Keep the plant out of reach of children and animals.
