Selaginella plana ‘Cypress Spikemoss’ is not a true moss but rather a type of lycophyte, which are the oldest living vascular plants that date back to 410 million years ago, making them somewhat prehistoric and unlike most plants by design. Cypress Spikemoss is called such due to its like appearance of Cypress tree leaves. It’s also called Asian Spikemoss from being native to India, Indochina and Indonesia. This low growing, shrub-like tropical plant has deep-green, scaly, coarse foliage that tends to grow upright until it becomes too heavy and then falls over. It appreciates part shade, high humidity, and constantly moist, humus soil. Over time, it can grow around 6” high and 12” wide.
USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11
Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:
Selaginellas can do well as a houseplant as long as the humidity is not too low, as they appreciate high humidity. It is common to have them in a hanging basket where they can expand and trail off the sides, similar to a fern. Their small foliage make them a great candidate for container gardens as well, again, only if it is kept humid enough.
Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:
Being tropical, this plant does great in the high moisture environment of a well-drained vivarium. It will expand to create a great groundcover that can be trimmed if necessary. It should be placed in the foreground of the vivarium and will provide great groundcover for most fauna with its wiry, flat foliage. It is said that Selaginella plana tolerates high moisture better than most other Selaginella species.
Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.
