The Oakleaf Fern, scientifically known as Aglaomorpha quercifolia, is an epiphytic fern native to Southeast Asia and Australia. Its common name comes from the shape of its sterile “nest” fronds, which resemble oak leaves.

Here’s how to care for this fascinating fern:

Light

Oakleaf ferns thrive in partial sun or bright, indirect light. They can tolerate full shade, but their growth might be slower, and the leaves might be less vibrant. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds. An east or west-facing window with a sheer curtain or a spot a few feet away from a south-facing window would be ideal indoors.

Temperature

This fern prefers warm temperatures between and (68-100°F). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below (50°F).

Humidity

Originating from humid tropical rainforests, the Oakleaf fern appreciates high humidity. Aim for humidity levels above 60%. You can increase humidity by:

  • Misting regularly: Mist the fronds several times a week, especially during dry periods.
  • Using a humidifier: A room humidifier can help maintain consistent humidity.
  • Placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water: As the water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the plant. Ensure the bottom of the pot is above the water line to prevent root rot.
  • Grouping plants together: Plants release moisture through transpiration, creating a more humid microclimate.

Watering

Oakleaf ferns prefer consistently moist soil but are also somewhat drought-tolerant. Water thoroughly when the top inch of the potting mix feels slightly dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant’s growth slows down. If mounted, mist or water the rhizome and roots frequently.

Substrate and Mounting

As an epiphyte, the Oakleaf fern naturally grows on trees and rocks. Therefore, it thrives in well-draining, airy substrates. You can use:

  • Orchid bark mix: This provides excellent drainage and aeration.
  • A mix of bark, coco coir, and perlite: This combination retains some moisture while ensuring good drainage.
  • Mounting: This fern does exceptionally well when mounted on a piece of wood, cork bark, or a similar material, mimicking its natural habitat. Secure the rhizome to the mount with fishing line or plant ties until it attaches itself with its roots.

Fertilizing

During the spring and summer (the active growing season), feed your Oakleaf fern every two weeks with a high-nitrogen fertilizer diluted to quarter strength for mature plants and even more diluted for younger ones. Water the plant before fertilizing to help the roots absorb nutrients and prevent burning. Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.

Pruning

Prune your Oakleaf fern in early spring to remove any damaged, yellowing, or dead fronds. This improves air circulation, which can help prevent fungal diseases, and keeps the plant looking tidy. Use sterilized pruning shears or scissors.

Propagation

The Oakleaf fern can be propagated by division. In early spring, carefully separate the rhizomes, ensuring each division has at least one growth point (frond or emerging frond). Plant the divisions in well-draining soil and maintain consistent moisture.

Additional Notes

  • The brown, papery “nest” fronds are a natural part of the plant and should not be removed. They help to collect debris and moisture, providing nutrients for the fern.
  • This fern can be grown indoors or outdoors in suitable tropical and subtropical climates (typically USDA zones 10-11).
  • It can be used in landscaping as an epiphyte on trees or as a lithophyte on walls.
  • The rhizomes of Aglaomorpha quercifolia have been used in traditional medicine for various purposes.

By providing the right conditions, your Oakleaf fern, Aglaomorpha Drynaria Quercifolia will reward you with its unique foliage and easy-going nature.
