Gorgeously pretty and almost entirely unknown, kopsia deserves a place in your frost-free garden. The gently-scented dainty flowers open from pink buds, and lighten as they mature, to pure white with a contrasting red eye, creating a lovely multi-shade effect. The tree form is native to northern Australia, but this species from the Andaman Isles will stay neat, making it very versatile.

Kopsia fruticosa – shrub vinca, pink gardenia

APPEARANCE :  Evergreen tropical shrub related to frangipani and carissa; with glossy green leaves and 5-petalled flowers which start out soft pink in bud and pale to white with a red centre as they mature. ‘Fruticosa’ means shrubby or bushy; this species is neat and compact.
USE FOR : Feature shrub, in a mixed garden bed, flowering hedge, in pots and containers.
PLANTING : Plant in full sun to partly shaded position, protect from wind and frost.
CARE : Mulch and water well, prune after flowering to promote compact growth and flowering. Feed with a controlled release fertiliser after flowering for best results. Protect from frost.
