Huperzia serrata prefers a cool, humid, and shaded environment similar to its natural forest habitat. It grows best in indirect or filtered light. Avoid direct harsh sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate foliage and dry the plant quickly. A shaded balcony, greenhouse corner, or indoor location near a north or east-facing window works well. If grown outdoors, place it under tree cover or shade netting where it receives soft morning light only.

This plant thrives in well-draining, moisture-retentive soil. A loose, airy mix is essential because its roots are sensitive to waterlogging. A good potting medium can be made by combining peat moss or coco peat, fine pine bark, leaf mold, and perlite or sand. The mix should stay slightly moist but never soggy. Adding forest compost or humus improves texture and nutrient availability. Avoid heavy garden soil, which can compact and suffocate roots.
