The Hoya krohniana Silver, also known as Hoya krohniana Eskimo, is a beautiful and relatively easy-to-care-for epiphytic plant native to tropical Asia. Its heart-shaped, slightly succulent leaves with a distinctive silver sheen make it a popular choice for indoor plant enthusiasts.

Hoya Krohniana Silver

Here’s a detailed guide to Hoya krohniana Silvers care:

Light

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal. This will encourage healthy growth and enhance the silver variegation on the leaves.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day, as it can scorch the leaves. However, some gentle morning or late evening sun can be beneficial.
  • East or west-facing windows are usually excellent locations. If you have a south-facing window, place the plant a few feet away or use a sheer curtain to filter the light.
  • Medium to bright light is tolerated, but lower light conditions may result in less vibrant foliage and reduced flowering.

Watering

  • Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Hoya krohniana ‘Silver’ is susceptible to root rot, so it’s crucial not to overwater.
  • Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of the soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.
  • Water sparingly during winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
  • Signs of underwatering include droopy or wrinkled leaves.
  • Signs of overwatering include yellowing and dropping leaves.

Soil

  • Use a well-draining potting mix. An orchid mix or a mix of regular houseplant soil with perlite, coco coir, or bark will provide the necessary drainage and aeration for the roots.

Humidity

  • Average household humidity is generally sufficient. However, Hoya krohniana ‘Silver’ will appreciate slightly higher humidity levels.
  • You can increase humidity by misting the plant occasionally, placing it on a pebble tray filled with water, or using a humidifier.
  • Ensure good air circulation around the plant, especially in humid conditions, to prevent fungal issues.

Temperature

  • Maintain warm temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C).
  • Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts from windows or air conditioners, as well as direct heat sources.

Fertilizer

  • Feed lightly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month.
  • Do not fertilize during the winter months when the plant is typically dormant.
  • Over-fertilizing can lead to salt buildup in the soil, which can harm the plant.

Repotting

  • Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
  • Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one, as Hoyas prefer to be somewhat root-bound.
  • Ensure the new pot has good drainage.

Flowering

  • Bright, indirect light and allowing the soil to dry out slightly can encourage flowering.
  • Mature plants produce clusters of small, white, fragrant flowers, often with a pinkish hue.
  • Do not remove the flower peduncles (spurs) after blooming, as they can produce more flowers in the future.

Propagation

  • Hoya krohniana ‘Silver’ can be easily propagated through stem cuttings.
  • Allow the cut end to callous over for a few hours or overnight before planting in moist potting mix or rooting in water.

Common Problems

  • Root rot: Caused by overwatering and poor drainage.
  • Yellowing leaves: Often a sign of overwatering.
  • Pale or scorched leaves: May indicate too much direct sunlight.
  • Lack of flowering: Can be due to insufficient light or improper watering.
  • Pests: Watch out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

By providing the right conditions and care, your Hoya Krohniana Silver will thrive and reward you with its beautiful foliage and delicate, fragrant blooms.
