Drynaria Bonii fern, also known as Aglaomorpha bonii, is a rare and interesting epiphytic fern native to Southeast Asia.

Drynaria Bonii Fern

Drynaria Bonii Fern Care:

  • Medium to low indirect light: Indoors, it thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its fronds.
  • Good natural air circulation/ventilation: Ensure the plant receives adequate airflow.

Watering:

  • Allow soil to dry completely between waterings: This is crucial. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Don’t keep the soil dry for long periods: While it needs to dry out, prolonged dryness should be avoided.
  • Occasional misting: Some sources suggest occasional misting might be beneficial.

Soil/Mounting:

  • Coarse, porous media: As an epiphyte, it needs well-draining soil. A mix of potting soil, cocopit, organic manure/vermicompost, charcoal chips, and perlite (e.g., 40% potting soil + 25% cocopit + 25% organic manure/vermicompost + 5% charcoal chips + 5% perlite) is recommended.
  • Best for baskets or mounted on tree-fern plaques: Due to its epiphytic nature, it does well when grown in a basket or mounted, mimicking its natural habitat.

Humidity:

  • May rest (leafless) if humidity drops below 50%: Be mindful of humidity levels, especially during dry periods.

Temperature:

  • Warm climate: It prefers warmer temperatures, typical of tropical environments.

Fertilizer:

  • Regular fertilization (not too heavily): A standard houseplant fertilizer at half concentration every 2 weeks during the growing season can be beneficial.

Growth Habit:

  • Compact: It’s a relatively hardy and compact fern.
  • Two types of fronds: It produces both spore-bearing fertile fronds and shield fronds (which are oval-shaped with a crocodile-like texture). The shield fronds can turn brown and papery.

Other Considerations:

  • Repotting: Repot the received Drynaria Bonii Fern in a 6-8 inch pot with suitable soil media.
  • Dormancy: Some Drynaria species may go through a dormant period (leafless or stop growing) during late December to early April. During this time, keep the medium slightly moist (water weekly or so).

Drynaria Bonii Fern

In summary, Drynaria Bonii ferns require bright, indirect light, well-draining conditions with the soil allowed to dry between waterings, and benefit from good air circulation. They thrive in warmer temperatures and can be grown in pots with a porous mix or preferably mounted or in baskets.
