Chlorophytum Comosum, Spider Plant Care Guide :

Light Requirements

Spider Plants grow best in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain strong leaf color and encourages the production of plantlets. They also tolerate low light, though growth may slow and variegated varieties may lose some contrast.
Avoid harsh direct sunlight, especially midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves and cause brown tips. Ideal placements include east- or north-facing windows, or a few feet away from a brighter window. Under grow lights, provide 8–10 hours of gentle light daily.

Watering

Spider Plants prefer evenly moist soil, but they are forgiving if you occasionally forget to water. Water thoroughly when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry.
Overwatering is more harmful than underwatering and can lead to root rot. Always allow excess water to drain freely. These plants are sensitive to fluoride and salts commonly found in tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips. Using filtered, rain, or RO water helps keep foliage healthy.

Humidity

Average household humidity is usually sufficient, but Spider Plants appreciate moderate humidity (40–60%). In very dry conditions, leaf tips may turn brown.
To improve humidity, group plants together, use a humidifier, or place the pot on a pebble tray. Avoid excessive misting, as it provides only short-term humidity and can encourage fungal issues.

Temperature

Spider Plants thrive in moderate indoor temperatures between 18–30°C. They tolerate warmth well but prefer cooler nights.
Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 10–12°C, which can damage the foliage. Keep it away from heaters and air conditioners for best results.

Potting Mix

A well-draining, light potting mix is ideal. Use a quality indoor plant soil mixed with perlite or coarse sand to improve aeration.
Spider Plants develop thick, fleshy roots that store water, so good drainage is essential. Slightly snug pots are preferred, as mildly root-bound plants often produce more plantlets.

Fertilizing

Feed during the active growing season (spring to early autumn) using a balanced liquid fertilizer at ½ strength every 3–4 weeks.
Excess fertilizer can cause salt buildup in the soil, leading to brown leaf tips. Flush the pot occasionally with plain water and reduce feeding during winter.

Growth and Plantlets

One of the Spider Plant’s most charming features is its long arching stems that produce baby plants, also called “spiderettes.” These appear once the plant matures and is growing in good light.
The baby plants can be left attached for a cascading display or easily propagated by placing them in soil or water until roots form.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim off brown or damaged leaf tips using clean scissors, following the natural shape of the leaf. Remove old or yellowing leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy and healthy.

Final Thoughts

Chlorophytum comosum is a tough, adaptable, and rewarding houseplant that suits homes, offices, and beginners alike.
