The Boston fern, scientifically known as Nephrolepis exaltata, is a popular houseplant prized for its lush, arching fronds.

Here’s a guide to keeping your Boston fern, Nephrolepis Exaltata happy:

Light

Boston ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the harsh afternoon hours, as it can scorch their delicate fronds. An east-facing window or a spot near a north or west-facing window with a sheer curtain is ideal. They can also grow outdoors in a partially shaded location.

Watering

These ferns prefer consistently moist soil, like a wrung-out sponge. Water thoroughly when the top inch of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch. Ensure your pot has drainage holes to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged, which can lead to root rot. You may need to water more frequently during warmer months. Reduce watering slightly in the winter when the plant’s growth slows down. Using lukewarm, lime-free water is best.

Humidity

Boston ferns are native to humid environments and thrive in high humidity. Aim for humidity levels above 60%. You can increase humidity by:

  • Misting the fronds regularly with room-temperature, lime-free water.
  • Placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water, ensuring the bottom of the pot doesn’t sit directly in the water. As the water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the plant.  Boston fern, Nephrolepis Exaltata
  • Using a humidifier, especially during dry indoor conditions caused by heating or air conditioning.
  • Placing the fern in a naturally humid room like a bathroom or kitchen, provided it receives adequate indirect light.
  • Grouping plants together, as they naturally increase the humidity around each other.

Temperature

Maintain a comfortable room temperature between 18°C and 24°C (65°F and 75°F). Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations and protect your fern from cold drafts. Night temperatures should ideally not drop below 13°C (55°F).

Soil

Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A peat-based mix with added perlite or sand to improve drainage is often recommended. The ideal soil pH is slightly acidic, between 5.5 and 6.5.

Fertilizing

During the active growing season (spring and summer), feed your Boston fern every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down. Ensure the soil is moist before fertilizing to prevent root burn.

Pruning

Regular pruning isn’t necessary, but you should remove any yellowing, brown, or dead fronds at the base of the plant using clean, sharp shears. This encourages new growth and maintains the plant’s appearance. You can also trim back any overly long or unruly fronds. More drastic pruning can be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to encourage a bushier plant.

Repotting

Repot your Boston fern when it outgrows its current container, typically every 12-18 months for younger plants and every few years for more mature ones. Signs that it’s time to repot include roots growing out of the drainage holes or the plant drying out very quickly. Choose a new pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one and use fresh potting mix. Spring is the best time for repotting.

Common Problems

  • Brown or crispy fronds: Often caused by low humidity, underwatering, or direct sunlight.
  • Yellowing fronds: Can be a sign of overwatering, poor drainage, or low humidity.
  • Leaf drop: May occur when the plant is adjusting to a new environment or due to inconsistent watering or low light.
  • Pests: While generally resistant, Boston ferns can occasionally attract pests like spider mites, mealybugs, or scale. Inspect your plant regularly and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

By providing the right conditions and consistent care, your Boston fern will thrive and bring a touch of lush greenery to your home.
