The term “Lantern Hibiscus” most commonly refers to Hibiscus schizopetalus (also known as Fringed Hibiscus, Japanese Lantern, or Coral Hibiscus), which is an exotic tropical shrub. Sometimes, the name may also be used for Malvaviscus arboreus (also called Turk’s Cap or Sleeping Hibiscus).

Here is a general care guide for the most common variety, Lantern Hibiscus :
1. Light
- Full Sun to Partial Shade: It thrives best with at least 5-7 hours of direct or filtered sunlight daily. In very hot climates, afternoon shade is beneficial.
2. Water
- Consistent Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during the growing season (spring and summer) and hot weather.
- Drainage is Key: Ensure the soil and pot (if container grown) have excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
3. Soil
- Well-Draining and Fertile: Use a fertile, loamy, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
- pH: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.
4. Temperature and Climate
- Tropical Plant: It is sensitive to cold. It thrives in warm, humid conditions.
- Frost Protection: Protect it from frost. If grown in a climate with cold winters, it should be kept in a container and moved indoors to a warm, bright spot before the first frost.
5. Fertilizer
- Regular Feeding: Fertilize every 3-4 weeks during the active growing season (spring through fall) with a balanced fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 NPK) or a bloom-booster formula.
- Reduce in Winter: Significantly reduce or stop feeding during the dormant winter months.
6. Pruning Lantern Hibiscus
- Light Pruning: Prune lightly after blooms fade to maintain shape and encourage fresh, bushy growth.
- Shape Control: For container plants, you can prune to control its size. It generally blooms on new wood, so pruning can stimulate more flowers.
7. Pests and Diseases
- Watch for Pests: Keep an eye out for common hibiscus pests like aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies.
- Treatment: Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Fungal Issues: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew.

Note on the other “Lantern” plant:
If your plant is actually Malvaviscus arboreus (Turk’s Cap), its care is generally easier:
- It is more tolerant of different soils and is often drought-tolerant once established.
- It is more cold-hardy and can tolerate partial shade to full sun.
