- Light: Philodendrons thrive in bright, indirect light. Think of their natural habitat—they grow under a canopy, receiving dappled sunlight. Place your plant near an east- or west-facing window, or a few feet away from a south-facing window. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light can lead to leggy growth with small, sparse leaves.
- Water: Water your plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. It’s better to slightly underwater than to overwater. Both can cause the leaves to droop, but overwatering can lead to root rot, which is more difficult to fix. Always use a pot with drainage holes and discard any excess water that collects in the saucer.
- Humidity & Temperature: Philodendrons love high humidity and warm temperatures, ideally between 60-85°F (15.5-29.4°C). They are sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 55°F (12.7°C) and drafts from air conditioning or heating vents. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, misting the leaves, or placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water.
- Soil: Use a loose, well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A good mix will often include ingredients like potting soil, coco coir, perlite, and/or orchid bark to ensure proper aeration for the roots. This mimics the chunky, airy soil found in their native environment.
- Fertilizer: During the spring and summer growing season, fertilize your plant once a month with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows down.
Philodendron Jorge’s Legend - Pruning & Support: ‘Philodendron Jorge’s Legend’ is a climbing variety. Providing a moss pole or trellis will encourage larger, more mature leaves. You can prune your plant to control its size and shape, or to remove any yellow or damaged leaves. Pruning also helps to encourage bushier growth.
