The Syngonium Erythrophyllum Red Arrow, often called the Black Syngonium due to its deep green, almost black upper leaves, is a striking and relatively easy-to-care-for houseplant.

Syngonium Erythrophyllum ‘Red Arrow’ - Black syngonium

Here’s a guide to keeping your Syngonium Erythrophyllum ‘Red Arrow’ – Black syngonium happy:

Light

It thrives in bright, indirect light, which will help it maintain its vibrant coloration. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, the colors may fade, and the growth might become leggy. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. An east or north-facing window is ideal.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure your pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. You’ll likely need to water more frequently during the spring and summer growing seasons and reduce watering slightly in the winter when growth slows down.

Humidity

This Syngonium appreciates higher humidity levels, which can be achieved by:

  • Misting the plant regularly with room-temperature water (rainwater is best to avoid spots on the leaves).
  • Placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water (making sure the bottom of the pot isn’t sitting directly in the water).
  • Using a humidifier.
  • Grouping it with other plants to create a more humid microclimate.

Soil

Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. An aroid mix, or a combination of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark, works well to provide the necessary drainage and aeration.

Temperature

Maintain average household temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant and cause leaf drop. It cannot tolerate temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Fertilizing

Feed your Red Arrow Syngonium every 4-6 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Do not fertilize during the winter months when the plant is dormant.

Pruning

Prune back any leggy or overgrown stems to encourage a bushier, more compact appearance. This can be done at any time of the year using clean, sharp pruning shears or scissors. You can also propagate the cuttings.

Repotting

Repot your Syngonium every 1-2 years, or when it becomes root-bound, into a pot only one size larger. Use fresh, well-draining potting mix to replenish nutrients. Spring is generally the best time for repotting.

Toxicity

Keep in mind that Syngonium Erythrophyllum ‘Red Arrow’ is considered mildly toxic if ingested, so it’s best to keep it away from pets and small children.

By providing the right conditions, your Syngonium Erythrophyllum Red Arrow Black syngonium will reward you with its unique and beautiful foliage.
