Sonerila Tepuai Blue – Care Guide:

Light Requirements

Sonerila tepuai Blue grows best in bright, indirect light. It prefers filtered light similar to what it would receive under a forest canopy. Avoid direct sunlight, as strong sun can scorch the delicate leaves and fade their iridescent blue tones. Too little light will slow growth and reduce leaf color intensity. A spot near an east-facing window with a sheer curtain or under a grow light works very well. If using grow lights, keep them at a moderate distance and provide about 10–12 hours of light daily.

Watering Needs
This plant likes evenly moist soil but is sensitive to overwatering. Water when the top layer of the growing medium feels slightly dry, but do not allow the root zone to dry out completely. Because it has fine roots, repeated drying can quickly damage the plant. Use small, gentle watering rather than heavy soaking. The pot or container must have good drainage. In terrariums, monitor moisture carefully so the medium stays damp but not soggy.

Humidity Requirements
High humidity is essential for Sonerila tepuai Blue. Ideally, humidity should remain above 70%. This makes it an excellent candidate for terrariums, closed jars, or greenhouse cabinets. In normal room humidity, the plant often struggles with leaf edge browning and slow growth. If grown outside a terrarium, use a humidity dome, pebble tray, or humidifier nearby. Stable humidity is more important than occasional misting.

Temperature
This is a warm-growing tropical species. Keep temperatures between 20°C and 28°C for best results. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops. Temperatures below 16°C can stress the plant and may cause leaf damage. Keep it away from air conditioners and direct fan airflow. Consistent warmth encourages steady, compact growth.

Soil / Growing Medium
Use a loose, airy, moisture-retentive mix. A good blend can include cocopeat, fine orchid bark, perlite, and a little compost or leaf mold. The goal is a mix that stays lightly moist while allowing air around the roots. Heavy garden soil is not suitable. Terrarium growers often use sphagnum moss mixed with perlite and bark for excellent results.

Fertilizing
Feed lightly during the active growing period. Use a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer at about one-quarter strength every 3–4 weeks. Overfertilizing can burn the fine roots and damage leaves. Because the plant is small and slow growing, it needs only gentle feeding. Flush the medium occasionally with plain water to prevent salt buildup.

Pruning and Maintenance
Sonerila tepuai Blue stays naturally compact and usually does not need heavy pruning. Remove any yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors. Keep the surrounding area clean and free from decaying plant matter, especially in terrariums, to prevent fungal issues. Good airflow (even in humid setups) helps keep foliage healthy.

Propagation
Propagation is usually done through stem cuttings or careful division of clumps. Cuttings root best in high humidity with warm temperatures. Place them in moist sphagnum or a fine propagation mix and keep covered until established. Growth is slow at first but becomes steadier once roots form.

Common Problems
The most common issues are low humidity, overwatering, and direct sun exposure. Symptoms include leaf browning, melting stems, or faded color. Maintain stable moisture, high humidity, and soft indirect light to keep the plant healthy.

With the right humid, warm, and gentle conditions, Sonerila tepuai ‘Blue’ becomes a stunning miniature highlight in any rare plant collection. 🌿
