Pronephrium simplex is a tropical fern valued for its elegant, arching fronds and lush green texture. It is commonly grown in shaded gardens and as an ornamental foliage plant in containers. Like many ferns, it thrives in humid, warm environments and rewards growers with dense, graceful growth when its basic needs are met. Here is a complete care guide to help your Pronephrium simplex stay healthy and vibrant.

Pronephrium simplex Care Guide :
Light Requirements
Pronephrium simplex prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade. It grows naturally under forest canopies, so filtered sunlight is ideal. Direct harsh sun can scorch the fronds, causing browning and curling at the edges. In outdoor landscapes, plant it under trees or on the shaded side of buildings. Indoors, place it near an east- or north-facing window with diffused light. Too little light will result in slow growth and pale fronds.
Temperature and Climate
This fern grows best in warm, tropical to subtropical climates. The ideal temperature range is between 18°C and 30°C. It does not tolerate frost and can be damaged if temperatures drop below 10°C. In cooler regions, grow it in pots so it can be moved indoors during cold weather. Keep it away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and heaters that can dry out the plant.
Watering Needs
Consistent moisture is essential for Pronephrium simplex. The soil should remain evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels slightly dry. Do not allow the soil to completely dry out, as this can lead to frond wilting and browning. At the same time, avoid standing water, which can cause root rot. Containers should always have drainage holes. During hot weather, watering frequency may need to increase.
Humidity
Being a fern, this plant loves high humidity. Aim for humidity levels above 60% for best results. In dry indoor environments, increase humidity by misting regularly, using a pebble tray with water, or placing a humidifier nearby. Grouping plants together also helps create a more humid microclimate. Low humidity often leads to dry, crispy frond tips.
Soil Requirements
Use a rich, well-draining soil mix high in organic matter. A good mix can include garden soil, coco peat or peat moss, compost, and a small amount of sand or perlite for drainage. The soil should hold moisture while still allowing excess water to drain away. Slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is ideal. Adding leaf mold or well-decomposed compost encourages strong root development.

Fertilizing
Feed Pronephrium simplex lightly during the growing season (spring and monsoon months). Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once every 3–4 weeks. Organic options like seaweed extract or vermicompost tea also work well. Avoid over-fertilizing, as ferns are sensitive to salt buildup and may develop burned leaf tips. Reduce or stop feeding during cooler months when growth slows.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove yellow, brown, or damaged fronds regularly to keep the plant neat and to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears and cut at the base of the frond. Trim old foliage to improve airflow and reduce the chance of fungal issues. Cleaning fallen debris around the plant also helps maintain hygiene.
Propagation
Pronephrium simplex can be propagated by division. Mature clumps can be carefully separated at the root ball into smaller sections, each with healthy roots and fronds. Replant divisions in moist soil and keep them shaded and humid until established. Division is best done during the active growing season.

Pests and Problems
This fern is generally hardy but may occasionally face issues with mealybugs, scale insects, or spider mites, especially in dry conditions. Inspect fronds regularly. Treat infestations with neem oil spray or mild insecticidal soap. Browning tips usually indicate low humidity or inconsistent watering. Yellowing may suggest overwatering or poor drainage.
With proper shade, moisture, and humidity, Pronephrium simplex becomes a beautiful, low-maintenance foliage plant that adds a soft, tropical feel to gardens and indoor spaces.
