The Begonia Dark Mambo is a stunning rhizomatous begonia, beloved for its striking, deep, velvety black leaves with light green veins. It’s a hybrid, part of the Rex begonia group, and while it’s known for its dramatic foliage, it can be a bit sensitive to improper care.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to caring for your Begonia Dark Mambo:
Light
- Bright, indirect light is key. This is crucial for maintaining the plant’s vibrant, dark coloration. Avoid direct sunlight, especially the intense afternoon sun, as it can easily scorch its delicate leaves.
- Ideal placement: A north or east-facing window is perfect. If you have a south or west-facing window, place the plant a few feet away or use a sheer curtain to filter the light.
- Tolerates lower light: While it can survive in lower light conditions, the color of its leaves may not be as intense.
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. This is the most common pitfall for begonia owners. The plant is very susceptible to root rot if it sits in water.
- Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering again. A good way to check is to stick your finger into the soil.
- Water thoroughly: When you do water, do so until water drains from the bottom of the pot.
- Avoid wetting the leaves. Water directly at the base of the plant. Water sitting on the velvety leaves can lead to fungal diseases like powdery mildew.
- The plant will “tell you” when it’s thirsty. It’s known to wilt dramatically when it needs water, but it will perk right back up once it gets a good drink.

Humidity and Temperature
- High humidity is essential. Begonias ‘Dark Mambo’ are native to tropical regions and thrive in high humidity, ideally 50% or higher.
- How to increase humidity: Use a humidifier, place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water (making sure the bottom of the pot doesn’t touch the water), or group it with other plants. Do not mist the leaves directly.
- Prefers consistent, warm temperatures. The ideal temperature range is between 65-75°F (18-24°C).
- Avoid drafts and sudden temperature swings. Keep it away from cold windows, air conditioning vents, or heating sources.
Soil and Potting
- Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A standard indoor potting mix with added perlite, vermiculite, or peat moss works well.
- Good drainage is non-negotiable. Ensure the pot has a drainage hole to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom and causing root rot.
- Repotting: This begonia has a rhizomatous growth habit, meaning it grows horizontally from a thick stem (rhizome) that sits at or just below the soil surface. Repot only when it becomes root-bound, typically every 1-2 years. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one.
Fertilizer
- Feed during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer.
- Dilute the fertilizer to avoid burning the roots. A half-strength or quarter-strength solution is often recommended.
- Do not fertilize in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.

Pruning and Maintenance
- Prune to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. You can pinch back leggy stems.
- Remove any dead or yellowing leaves at the base to keep the plant healthy and tidy.
- Common issues: Watch out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly.
- Toxicity: Like many other begonias, ‘Dark Mambo’ is toxic to pets and humans if ingested, so keep it out of reach.
