Adwin Joseph Pereira: An Autobiography of Resilience and Growth – Founder

Hello, I’m Adwin Joseph Pereira, the founder and CEO of Jiffy Plants, India’s pioneering online plant shopping site. Here’s my story—one of passion, resilience, and a dream that took root in 2016.

I’ve always been a plant enthusiast. Growing up, I found joy in nurturing greenery, but it wasn’t until after graduation that I decided to transform my passion into a unique career. While my friends secured jobs in reputed companies or moved abroad, I stayed back in my hometown, alone but undeterred.

It wasn’t easy. Relatives, neighbors, and even my parents’ colleagues ridiculed my decision. They urged me to “get a real job” and warned against “spoiling my life.” But I had a dream, and I wasn’t ready to give up. My parents stood by me, and I started attending motivational sessions for startups. Encouraged, I decided to take a leap of faith and start a business—with zero investment.

My journey began modestly, focusing on selling live plants online within Kerala. It was a risk, and I had countless doubts—Would people buy plants online? Could I handle the logistics? What if plants arrived damaged? My first attempt didn’t go as planned. I posted an advertisement for Ficus pumila (wall creeper) on second hand product selling platform and received an order for 10 rooted cuttings. Lacking knowledge in packing, I sent the plants loosely tied in a box via India Post. Unfortunately, the shipment arrived late, and the plants had dried up. The customer demanded a refund, and I complied, absorbing the loss.

For days, I was disheartened. Friends and relatives advised me to abandon the idea, but I refused to give up. Instead, I researched proper packing techniques, determined to improve. My second attempt was a success—I shipped a plant safely in a pot with secure packaging. The customer was delighted and recommended my budding business to others. That moment marked a turning point in my journey.

From then on, I worked tirelessly, collecting both common and rare plant varieties from across India and countries like China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Brazil. My dream was to create a robust online marketplace for plants, and today, that dream is a reality.

We have now completed over 1 lakh orders and offers more than 2,000 species of live plants. From a single ad on second hand product selling platform to becoming India’s premier plant shopping platform, my journey proves that with persistence, learning, and passion, even the most unlikely dreams can flourish.This is our story.
