Micro Strawberry Begonia (Saxifraga stolonifera ‘Micro’) Care Guide :

Light Requirements

Micro Strawberry Begonia prefers bright, indirect light, though it tolerates lower light better than many houseplants. In its natural habitat, it grows under forest cover where sunlight is filtered.
Avoid direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, as it can scorch the leaves and fade their soft texture. An east- or north-facing window, or a shaded spot near a brighter window, is ideal. Under grow lights, provide gentle illumination for 8–10 hours daily.

Watering

This plant enjoys consistently moist soil, but it does not like to sit in water. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels slightly dry. During warmer months, watering may be needed more frequently, while in cooler seasons it should be reduced.
Use room-temperature, filtered, or rainwater when possible. Overwatering can cause root rot, while letting the soil dry out completely may lead to wilting and leaf drop.

Humidity

Micro Strawberry Begonia thrives in moderate to high humidity (50–70%), making it an excellent choice for terrariums and indoor gardens. While it can tolerate average household humidity, higher humidity keeps the leaves lush and prevents browning at the edges.
If your indoor air is dry, use a humidifier, group plants together, or place the pot on a pebble tray. Avoid heavy misting, as constantly wet leaves can invite fungal problems.

Temperature

This plant prefers cool to warm indoor temperatures, ideally between 16–26°C. It appreciates slightly cooler nights and does not enjoy excessive heat.
Protect it from cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, and hot air from heaters or air conditioners. Stable conditions encourage steady growth and healthy runner formation.

Potting Mix

A light, well-draining yet moisture-retentive soil works best. A good mix includes:

  • Coco peat or peat moss

  • Perlite or pumice

  • A small amount of compost or leaf mold

The soil should hold moisture without becoming compacted. Shallow pots or hanging baskets are ideal, as the plant spreads horizontally through runners.

Fertilizing

Feed lightly during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at ¼ to ½ strength once every 3–4 weeks.
Over-fertilizing can cause excessive soft growth and reduce leaf quality. Stop or greatly reduce feeding during winter when growth slows.

Growth, Runners, and Flowers

Micro Strawberry Begonia produces thin runners (stolons) that form baby plants at their tips, much like strawberries. These can be left to trail for a cascading effect or pinned into soil to create new plants.
In favorable conditions, it produces delicate white flowers with long lower petals, usually in spring or early summer. While charming, the foliage remains the main attraction.

Pruning and Propagation

Trim leggy growth and remove damaged leaves to keep the plant compact. Propagation is extremely easy—simply place a runner’s baby plant onto moist soil until it roots, then separate it from the parent.

  • Brown leaf edges: Low humidity or underwatering

  • Leaf scorch: Too much direct sunlight

  • Pests: Occasionally aphids or spider mites in dry air

Final Thoughts

Micro Strawberry Begonia is a low-maintenance, beginner-friendly plant with a soft, woodland charm. With gentle light, consistent moisture, and moderate humidity, it will quickly form a lush, trailing display—perfect for indoor plant lovers who enjoy delicate foliage with minimal fuss.
