🍄 Caring for your Acanthocereus Tetragonus (Fairy Castle Cactus) is straightforward, as it is a resilient and low-maintenance cactus. It gets its common name from its many vertical stems that resemble the turrets of a miniature castle.

Here is a guide to help you keep your Acanthocereus Tetragonus – Fairy Castle Cactus thriving:
☀️ Light Requirements
- Bright Light is Key: This cactus needs a lot of light to maintain a compact, healthy shape.
- Indoors: Place it in your brightest spot, typically near a south or west-facing window.
- Direct Sun: It can handle some direct sunlight, especially morning sun, but too much harsh afternoon sun can cause sun stress (reddish-brown patches) or scorching. If indoor light is limited, you may want to supplement with a grow light.
- Low Light Signs: If the light is inadequate, the stems may start to look pale, dull, or “leggy” (stretching out toward the light).
💧 Watering
- Drought Tolerant: Like most cacti, the Fairy Castle Cactus is extremely sensitive to overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- “Soak and Dry” Method: Only water when the soil is completely dry.
- Growing Season (Spring/Summer): Water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom hole, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again (typically every 2-4 weeks).
- Dormancy (Fall/Winter): Significantly reduce watering, giving it just enough to prevent the stems from shriveling (typically every 4-8 weeks).
- Drainage is Crucial: Always use a pot with a drainage hole and promptly empty any water from the saucer.

🪴 Soil and Potting
- Well-Draining Soil: Use a specialized cactus or succulent potting mix.
- Drainage Enhancement: You can improve drainage by mixing your potting soil with materials like perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.
- Pot Type: Unglazed terracotta pots are often recommended as they allow excess moisture to evaporate more easily.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or when the plant has outgrown its current container, to refresh the soil and check the roots.
🌡️ Temperature and Environment
- Warmth is Preferred: It thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 70°F and 100°F (21°C to 38°C) during the day.
- Frost Sensitive: It is not frost-tolerant. Protect it from temperatures dropping below 50°F (10°C) and keep it away from cold drafts.
- Humidity: This cactus prefers low humidity, which is typical of most indoor environments.

🍽️ Fertilizer
- When to Fertilize: Feed only during the active growing season (spring and summer).
- What to Use: Apply a diluted, balanced, low-nitrogen cactus or succulent fertilizer once a month.
- Stop Feeding: Do not fertilize in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
