Light
- Place in a location with bright, indirect light, such as near a window
- If kept outside, protect from scorching afternoon sun, but allow some morning sun
Soil
- Use a well-draining soil mix with lots of air pockets
- Add perlite or vermiculite to improve drainage
- Add some organic matter for nutrition

Watering
- Water regularly and thoroughly
- Allow excess water to drain from the bottom of the container
- Water less frequently in the fall and winter
- During the summer, water more frequently if bottom watering
Fertilizing
- Fertilize once a year in the spring with compost
- Plants get their energy from sunlight, not fertilizer

Dormancy
- Tom Thumb plants may go dormant in the summer and grow more slowly
- Water more sparingly during this time
