The Tecoma orange plant is a flowering shrub with bright orange, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in clusters:

  • Appearance: Tecoma orange plants are woody shrubs that can grow up to 3.5 meters tall and 3 meters wide. They have bright green leaves with toothed margins and purplish leaf nodes.
  • Flowers: The flowers are tubular and look like elongated bells, which is why some people call them Orange Bells. They bloom from late spring until the first frost, or all year round in warmer climates.
  • Growing conditions: Tecoma orange plants prefer full sun and regular watering, and can tolerate a variety of soil types. They are relatively drought-resistant and grow well in warm climates.
  • Propagation: Tecoma orange plants can be propagated by stem cuttings or seeds.
  • Repotting: Tecoma plants should be repotted or replanted when they become bunchy in growth.
  • Pests and diseases: Tecoma orange plants typically don’t have notable pests or diseases.
Here are some tips for caring for a Tecoma orange plant:
  • Sunlight

Tecoma plants need lots of sunlight, at least 6–8 hours of direct sun per day. They are native to sunny locations and bloom best in full sun.

  • Soil

Tecoma plants grow best in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil.

  • Watering

Water Tecoma plants regularly, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can make the soil soggy.

  • Fertilizer

In the spring, feed your Tecoma plant with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid fertilizing in direct sun.

  • Temperature

Protect Tecoma plants from freezing temperatures.

  • Propagation

You can propagate Tecoma plants from seeds or cuttings in the spring or early summer. For cuttings, plant a healthy stem in well-draining soil and keep the soil moist until roots develop.

Tecoma plants are also known as Cape Honeysuckle, yellow trumpetbush, yellow bells, yellow elder, and ginger thomas. They can grow up to 2–3 meters tall and bloom orange flowers year-round.
