Here are some tips for caring for a Selaginella willdenowii variegated plant: 
  • Watering

    Water regularly and thoroughly during the growing season, but avoid overwatering. The soil should be kept moist but not soggy. Use water that’s at least room temperature, as cold water can shock the plant. 

  • Light

    Place in bright, filtered light. 

  • Fertilizer

    Use a fertilizer with each feeding in the spring, summer, and fall. You can also fertilize with orchid fertilizer at half concentration every two weeks. 

  • Humidity

    Maintain a high humidity of 80% or more. You can mist the plant with tepid water at least once a day, or keep the pot in a tray of damp peat or wet pebbles. 

  • Temperature

    Keep the plant in a warm environment with temperatures between 22 and 28°C during the day and not below 18°C at night. 

  • Substrate

    Grow the plant in a loose and airy substrate, such as pure Sphagnum moss, treefern litter, or coconut chips. 

  • Acclimation

    The plant may need time to acclimate to the average home humidity and environment. 

Selaginella willdenowii, also known as the peacock spikemoss or club moss, is a primitive plant that’s native to Malaysia and Thailand. It has a mix of fern and moss characteristics, and its leaves are prone to browning due to high variegation.
