The Barleria Purple Gem, or the Bush Violet as it can be more commonly known, is a very pretty evergreen shrub growing 900mm to 1.2 metres. Wearing beautiful purple-green foliage this is a great feature plant for the garden, offering stunning, colourful contrast and sweet purple flowers arriving in the warmer months. Ideal for use in rockeries, bank planting, contrasting foliage, borders and mass planting.
Regular light pruning is encouraged for the best growth habit, and she prefers a more sheltered position away from strong winds, but we promise she is well worth the effort when she flowers!
Frost, wind tender; sheltered position. Most well drained soils; mulch in summer. Full sun or part shade.
Barleria obtusa ‘Purple Gem’, also known as the bush violet, is a shrub with ornamental leaves and small purple flowers:
